Why do I stink when using a natural deodorant?
Sometimes newbies using natural deodorants complain that they stink more than before, when they were using conventional deodorants. As a result of the stink, they give up on natural deodorant and turn back to their former product. I think, they give up too early on their new natural deodorant thinking it doesn’t work.
And here is why you shouldn’t give up on your natural deodorant too soon
Using any deodorant changes the body’s bacteria overtime. Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants are absorbed through the skin, and after many years of using these products, a lot of chemical residues have built up on a person’s skin.
So whether you stop using deodorant or whether you switch to a natural deodorant, it is a temporary effect of your body’s bacteria. It is also a fact that your body is detoxing from whatever was applied to your armpits before. This process takes time and is stinky.
Fast facts on armpit detox:
- The armpits are one of the body’s entry (absorbing) and exit (sweat) points
- Deodorants are designed to mask and avoid the smell of excess bacteria from sweating
- Antiperspirants are designed to reduce sweating by clogging the pores
- The detox process is designed to kill bacteria and stop the stink.
Detox your underarms can help to pass through the process quicker and avoid the stink. It’s worth considering if you’re changing your deodorant routine.
Detoxing your underarms can also be done throughout your daily routine if you realise an increased stink. This might be due to stress, hormonal changes or simply because it’s hot outside and you sweat way more than you do with lower temperatures.
Stress leads to more stink
Times are currently everything but easy. We are living in times of a Pandemic and the constant doubts, fears and insecurities about our future is worrisome and stressful.
Even if you don’t feel worried, your body might still perceive the symptoms and translate it into a higher adrenaline and stress level in your body. To make it short: To stop the stink try this detox procedure, all natural and nothing to worry about as a side effect.
Armpit detoxification can help the body rid itself of toxins that have built up on the skin
It may also help to reduce the capacity of sweat glands and the amount of odor they produce. If it works for you that’s awesome. And I would be happy if you don’t give up on your natural deodorant too quickly and stick with it.
I am so convinced that natural deodorants are the better choice. And I have to say it is almost independent which brand you buy. Of course, there are differences in the natural deodorant brands, but you have to try out several brands and see which one works best for you.
How to detox your underarms
So let’s get to it. How do you detox your armpits? What do you need to have on your shopping list before you can get started?
Simple recipe with three ingredients:
- 1 tsp bentonite clay
- 1-2 tsp water
- 1 tsp apple vinegar (if you want to add it, you don’t have to)
You also need a clean washcloth and some cotton balls/ or another washcloth (if you don’t believe in using cotton balls).
How to detox
Since we are a company that believes in natural remedies and all natural ingredients, we recommend using bentonite clay and apple vinegar. The bentonite clay absorbs oil and bacteria when applied to your skin.
- Mix bentonite clay with water in the palm of your hand or in a little bowl until you get a smooth consistency. It shouldn’t be too liquid or too thick.
- Apply the mixture onto your armpits and let it dry up a bit (Leave it on for 5-15 minutes) .
WORD OF CAUTION: In case you experience an allergic reaction remove the clay ASAP. Bentonite clay will draw out impurities from within the skin such as bacteria, so if the skin turns red that is quite normal.
- After 5-15 minutes wash off the clay in the shower, or with a wet, warm washcloth.
- If desired, you can swipe your armpits with apple cider vinegar using cotton balls or a second washcloth. ACV is known to neutralize bad bacteria that may be causing the stink, but it’s also a mild acid. I don’t recommend doing this if you have sensitive skin.
Repeat the detox routine daily, or as needed, to keep the stink at bay. If you are switching to natural deodorant do this process during the first two weeks before applying the natural deodorant.
It might help to transition and stick with your new and healthier routine and will be a lot better then immediately giving up and going back to the chemicals and aluminum deodorants you might have used before.
Benefits of armpit detox
Depending on what your aim is you want to achieve with armpit detox there are several benefits to this procedure. You may want to get rid of deodorant all together. Maybe you are in the transition phase from using conventional deodorants to natural deodorants. Or you are going through a stressful time or hormonal changes?
There is always a benefit to detoxing your armpits every now and then.
Remove unwanted buildup in armpits
Antiperspirants and deodorants leave a sticky and often not healthy buildup under the armpits. It is often impossible to wash it off with soap, and a detox can help. Aluminum used in many conventional deodorants clogs the pores under the arms to keep you from sweating. An armpit detox may help pull out some of the chemicals that have built up in the armpits.
Although the armpits are an area that is close to the lymphatic systems, it will not reduce your risk for breast cancer or keep you from getting ill. Some hard core naturalists claim that this is the case, but we’d rather keep this article on the fact based side of things. Plus, there is no need to increase the benefits of detoxing, since I feel even if you can only get rid of the stink, that’s a big win, no?
Eliminate the stink
A common reason for an armpit detox is to remove or at least minimize armpit odor. Because apple cider vinegar has some antibacterial properties and the bentonite clay can take away the existing bacteria from your skin, this will hopefully work for you as well.
